CLEVELAND, Ohio - Adele, Adele, Adele. That's been the common thought about the 59th Annual Grammy Awards, to be held on Feb. 12. We'll finally find out if comes to fruition.
Grammy nominations will be announced on Tuesday, Dec. 6. Adele is expected to lead the nominations, with other major artists like Drake, Beyonce, Sia and Justin Bieber to contend.
Here's a look at the four major awards and what we think you can expect from this year's nominations.
Record of the Year
- Adele - "Hello"
- Justin Bieber - "Love Yourself"
- The Chainsmokers feat. Halsey - "Closer"
- Rihanna feat. Drake - "Work"
- David Bowie - "Lazarus"
Other contenders: Lukas Graham - "7 Years," Beyonce - "Formation," "Drake - "One Dance," "Sia feat. Sean Paul - "Cheap Thrills"
Adele is a lock here (and virtually everywhere else she's eligible). We may also see a sentimental nod for David Bowie, more respect for Justin Bieber and acknowledgment of EDM with Chainsmokers. Lastly, we think the powerhouse collaboration between Drake and Rihanna will beat out he former's single "One Dance."
Song of the Year
- Adele - "Hello"
- Justin Bieber - "Love Yourself"
- Thomas Rhett - "Die a Happy Man"
- Beyonce - "Formation"
- Kanye West - "Ultralight Beam"
Other contenders: Sia feat. Sean Paul - "Cheap Thrills;" Drake - "One Dance;" Lukas Graham - "7 Years;" Kelly Clarkson - "Piece by Piece;" "James Bay - "Let it Go"
A reminder that this category goes to the songwriter, rather than the performer. That being said, the message of Beyonce's "Formation" fits well here. You can also expect duplicate nods for Adele (less guaranteed but likely) Bieber. Country music plays well in this category and Thomas Rhett's "Die a Happy Man" is the best choice from the past year. The final nomination goes to our sleeper pick Kanye West, whose all-star collaboration "Ultralight Beam" could accomplish the same feat "All of the Lights" did a few years ago.
Album of the Year
- Adele - "25"
- Beyonce - "Lemonade"
- Drake - "Views"
- Radiohead - "A Moon Shaped Pool"
- David Bowie - "Blackstar"
Other contenders: Justin Bieber - "Purpose;" Bon Iver - "22, A Million;" Chance the Rapper - "Coloring Book;" Sia - "This Is Acting;" Paul Simon - "Stranger to Stranger"
This seems like an easy category to predict (So expect us to be completely wrong). The first four appear to be like locks. Bowie's "Blackstar" isn't as certain as the others, but should narrowly beat out well-received releases from Bon Iver, Chance the Rapper and Paul Simon.
Best New Artist
- Chance the Rapper
- Maren Morris
- The Chainsmokers
- The 1975
- Lukas Graham
Other contenders: Alessia Cara, Cam. Halsey; Bryson Tiller, Troy Sivan; Kelsea Ballerini
Outside of favorite Chance the Rapper, this category is wide open. If The Chainsmokers do earn a nomination in another major category, they'll show up here as well. Lukas Graham's single "7 Years" was a big hit that will be voters heads. The 1975 gives us an actual band to root for. And you can expect at least one country singer (Either Maren Morris, Cam or Kelsea Ballerini) in the mix.
