Rumor had it that Adele — you know, the siren-songed, ginger-haired, foul-mouthed British megastar — was going to play in the Quincy Center T station. But it was too good, and weird, to be true.

The falsehood apparently got so big that the MBTA Transit Police had to tweet multiple times that they prefer people not overrun the station at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

“Obviously, we didn’t believe it, but we confirmed that it wasn’t true,” said Transit Police Superintendent Richard Sullivan, who explained that the police monitor social media for potential problems. “Our sole concern was public safety.”

The rumor seems to have started on the Facebook page of a local DJ, Usual Suspects.

The Facebook event page shows that 629 people were interested in going. The special guest is Train.

“There could have been a rush; Adele is very popular,” said Sullivan, adding that it could have been hundreds of additional people coming to the station at rush hour.

“No one called, it was simply us getting ahead of it.”

The Facebook page also lists fake shows for the bands Korn and the Red Hot Chili Peppers at Whole Foods in Weymouth, and Digital Underground with Snoop Dogg at a Weymouth Burger King Bathroom.

If you want to see Adele, you’re going to have to do it the old-fashioned way: in concert. The singer is performing at the TD Garden on Wednesday and Thursday nights. Tickets for those shows sold out in an hour way back in December.
